from the Arizona high desert with "Cactus Rose." This song was mined from an Arizona barn and found etched on an old saddle near the Gold Nugget Saloon. Lyrics were signed by Wild Bill Hickok and melody kept alive by old cowboys. When camping in Northern Montana a retired Rodeo cowboy sang me the song after seeing me going for runs on the trails. He wondered if my horse got away like Cactus Rose. He told me about the cactus flower bloom that only occurs a few days a year. The song stuck in my head and like a spring creek got wider and wilder. I still imagine a spirited cowgirl singing the lead on this song. I'm still looking for that voice. For the last 3 years I kept hearing someone playing the spoons on this song and I tracked down Artis the Spoonman who happily added the rhythm of a trotting horse. Artis told me he spent 20yrs of his life living outside like a cowboy. Leave comments

Arizona desert with "Cactus Rose." Hard to know where to begin on this song written by Wild Bill Hickock and found etched on a saddle at the Gold Nugget Saloon. Now if you believe this I have the papers for a little gold mine I'd love to sell you. The truth is a little less exciting and the song began after camping in Northern Montana next to a retired Rodeo cowboy who thought it was extremely strange that I was going for runs on the trails. It then became a song called "Runnin Cowboy" about a cowboy that kept getting dispached from his horse. I then got inspired about the cactus flower bloom that only occurs for a few days every year at the end of May in the Arizona high desert. The song then became Cactus Rose and like a spring creek got wider and wilder. I just couldn't get it out of my head the voice of a spirited cowgirl singing the lead on this song. I'm still looking for that voice. For the last 3 years I kept hearing someone playing the spoons on this song and I tracked down Artis the Spoonman who happily added the rythm of a trotting horse to the song. Artis told me he spent 20yrs of his life living outside like a cowboy. He had fond memories of playing all night at a campfire serenading the moon ...?
